What I Look For in Students

I am always looking for talented, motivated, and collaborative students with a strong interest in molecular biology. To evaluate whether my lab aligns with your goals, please reflect on the following questions:

1. Are you excited to learn new things and acquire technical skills to tackle fundamental scientific questions?

2. After reading many textbooks, do you dream that your own discoveries could one day appear in future biology textbooks?

3. Do you aspire to become an independent researcher in the future?

If you answer “yes” to at least two of these questions, there is a good chance you will thrive in my group.

To help both of us assess the fit, please email me
- a brief statement explaining why you want to join my lab and why you believe it fits your goals; and
- a short description of your previous research experience.

My Mentoring Philosophy

When comparing potential advisors, I encourage you to ask each one about their mentoring style. Here is mine in brief:

It is both an honor and a responsibility to mentor talented students. My role is to help you discover your passions, develop strong scientific skills, stay focused on productive research, and ultimately achieve your long-term career goals.

Because education is the key to independence, I have different expectations depending on the degree:

For MSc students

I expect you to grow into an independent entry-level researcher who can plan and conduct assigned experiments responsibly. After training in my lab, you should be a valuable contributor to any research group and able to work effectively under scientific supervision.

For PhD students

I expect you to become an independent scientist—able to form hypotheses, design and perform experiments, interpret results, and communicate your findings clearly through writing and presentations. My goal is to prepare you to lead your own scientific research in the future.

Regardless of degree, I encourage all lab members to support and challenge one another. Constructive feedback—both giving and receiving—is essential for good science.

While funding should not be the primary reason for choosing a lab, I do have Graduate Assistantships and Fellowship Stipends for students who require support.

How to Join

I accept MSc and PhD students through the Biochemistry Graduate Program (MSc/PhD). Please refer to the Graduate School website for application deadlines and requirements.

If you are already enrolled in one of our graduate programs, feel free to contact me by email or visit my office at Pr304.
