Chanarat lab

Laboratory of Molecular Medical Mycology, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University

Welcome to the Chanarat Lab

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University

We study molecular microbiology and pathogenic fungi, with a special focus on Cryptococcus neoformans, emerging fungal infections, and the genetics of fungal stress responses. Our research integrates molecular biology, functional genomics, fungal genetics, and host–pathogen interaction models to uncover how fungi survive, adapt, and cause disease.

We are also interested in space microbiology, synthetic biology of edible fungi, and one-health fungal epidemiology, reflecting our lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

Our mission is to:
  • answer fundamental questions in fungal biology,
  • translate scientific insights into public-health and clinical relevance, and
  • train motivated young scientists to become independent thinkers and researchers.

News and updates
Dec 19, 2025
Our new paper on the effects of Rhinacanthus nasutus (ทองพันชั่ง) on the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans has been published in PLOS ONE. This work was led by our MSc student Muthita, with significant contributions from Trin, our high-school intern. Congratulations to the team on this achievement!

Oct 22, 2025 Our new paper on the effects of simulated microgravity on the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans has been published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology. This study contributes to understanding potential microbial infection risks faced by astronauts during space missions. This work was supported by PMU-B under the Space Science research program. Congratulations to Dr. Tanaporn and her team on this excellent work!

Jan 7, 2025 Our first paper on Cryptococcus neoformans has been published in Microbiology Spectrum. In this study, we developed a new dominant selection system for genetic manipulation in this pathogenic fungus. Congratulations to our MSc student Muthita, who led this work.
